Watercolor painting of two Cheetahs

'Calling the Third Brother'

Watercolour painting of two cheetahs standing on a twisting tree trunk.

As you can gather from the title these two cheetahs were part of a three brother coalition. They'd been drinking at the waterhole you can see in the background and then decided to move off back into the scrubland. Unfortunately they decided to walk through a herd of wildebeest that were approaching the waterhole. The cheetahs weren't hunting the wildebeest but the wildebeest were nonetheless very unimpressed! The herd chased the cheetahs off, with the cats scattering in all directions, closely pursued by stampeding wildebeest. These two brothers escaped and found each other again quickly, taking up post on the tree trunk to call and look for the third brother. It was a sad and tense time watching them, their calls were very plaintive and heart rending to hear. Happily the third brother did eventually re-appear and the trio went back into the bush together.

Reflecting the drama of the event this painting is deliberately done in a slightly looser style than some of my other paintings incorporating broad and splashy brush work.
